The Southside Master Gardener Association will hold a rain barrel workshop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on June 5th during HaliFair at the Halifax County Fairgrounds. Cost of the class is $40 per barrel. Class size is limited so pre-registration is required.

3rd Annual Clash of the Carts.
The competition invites teams of amateur engineers, mechanics, performing artists, general goofballs, and others to create outrageous human powered soapbox carts to race against the clock in a two block downhill sprint to the finish line. The race will be held on June 5th, 2010 as we close down Lamar Street in Uptown Roxboro from Gordon Street through Reams Avenue. Carts will line up for spectator viewing at 9:00 am in the Pit area located in the Merritt Commons parking lot near the Main Street Pavilion. The drivers meeting will start in the pavilion promptly at 10:00 am followed by the actual race.

SVMBA rejoins in the action for the 2010 Virginia Off Road Series. For 2010, SVMBA will bring us the The Shootout on Anglers Ridge and the Southside Scramble. Both incredible races that draw from both sides of the Virginia border. The 3rd Annual Shootout on Anglers Ridge is a USA Cycling-sanctioned mountain bike race that brings two state series together on the same day. On Sunday June 13th, the Southern Classic Series of North Carolina and the Virginia Off-Road Series will race at Anglers Ridge. Checkered Pig BBQ and Ribs will be providing post-race grub to all racers and volunteers. With over $8,000.00 in cash and prizes, this year's event will be our best ever. History Day at Collinsville Library is an informal gathering of people interested in discussing and learning about the history of the area. History Day is held four times a year on the third Sunday afternoon of February, May, August and November. The event starts at 2:30 pm.
There's a diverse group of people attending History Day and have a wealth of information to share with all. Participants bring items for "Show and Tell"; photos, memorabilia and personal collections. You can be a participant also. You would be surprised what you have at home and remember if it pertains to history, you can bring it and talk about is.
The topics discussed are as varied as the people attending. Time is allotted for questions, sharing information and for assistance in identifying items. You're invited to attend all sessions and learn about history.

Show your support for area rivers by joining the Dan River Basin Association at an exciting evening of thrills, spills, and splashes at the second annual Smith River Film Festival!
Have a bag of popcorn while you enjoy watching films showcasing the scenic beauty of rivers found within the Dan River basin and the recreational opportunities that they can provide.
Don't forget to vote for your favorites! Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place videos, the best wipeout and the most entertaining safety video.
All proceeds will benefit the enhancement and addition of new river access points and trails along the Smith, Mayo and Dan Rivers. Proceeds from the 2009 event helped open a new river access at Mitchell Road.

Third annual Smith River Fest -
The Smith River Fest is an annual event held each year in Martinsville & Henry County Virginia. For the third year in a row the Dan River Basin Association hopes to obtain a special water release from Philpott Dam to allow for a swift ride down the Smith River through six miles of class I/II+ rapids from Philpott Dam to Bassett.
While waiting for the release of water to turn on paddlers can set shuttle (FREE shuttle service), browse through vendor booths, listen to live music & check out the latest in paddling gear offered by local outfitters. Once the waters rise participants can compete in a river race, enjoy a thrilling float, or wait for the waters to receed to enjoy a guided family fun float.
After the release is over and water levels go down, put on your waders- it's time to gear up for fly fishing at it's finest!
