Container Gardening - Part 1

Building a Raised Bed Garden

Garden area before clearing

This is the area we selected for the raised beds. It was fairly level, close to a water source and had decent sun all day. The only catch was the poor old pear tree which was about to go over in the next good wind storm had to go. Yes, those are power lines running through the branches. We had a project on our hands.

Using a polesaw to carefully cut small branches away from powerlines

Step 1: Carefully cutting all the small limbs and branches away from the lines. This required cutting the power to the garage for the better part of an afternoon.

The aftermath of tree cutting adventure.

Several hours later we had the tree down and a mess to clean up. After cutting away from the powerlines, we used a winch to pull the main bulk of the tree away from the lines while cutting it off with a chainsaw. Winch ran from the other tree in the background to the upper part of the tree we were cutting. What you don't see here is the bulk of the limbs and debris behind the camera. Clean up was a lot like work.

Thanks to the 4wheeler and a chain, we now have a rather large brush pile out in the field. Now all we have to do is level the stump, finish the clean up and we are ready to build the beds.
